Today we recognize PINK SHIRT DAY 💟 Over 75% of people say they’ve been bullied. Over 90% of bullying incidents have peer witnesses. But when those peers intervene, most incidents are over within 10 seconds. Bullying could be happening to someone you know and care about – join us in taking a stand against bullying, and letting your peers know that it is not okay. Show kindness, empathy, and compassion, and speak out!

Bullying isn’t just a part of growing up – it’s overwhelming, hurtful, and can make people feel alone. It can affect learning, friendships, and most importantly, physical and emotional health. If you are a victim of bullying, reach out for help. Talk to a parent, teacher, or friend. Do you have a friend who is being bullied? Let them know they’re not alone, and speak out. Most bullying incidents stop within 10 seconds if a bystander intervenes. Friendly reminder that tomorrow is PINK SHIRT DAY! Show your support and sport your best pink. Grade 7 and 8 students attended Mass at St. James Parish this morning. Grateful for the opportunities to celebrate our faith!

To say that we are proud would be an understatement ❤ Meet Tanner & Silas, two young boys from Grade 5, who kickstarted an initiative here at our school – combing through trash cans for bottles and recyclables during their recesses and lunch break (and outside of school). They store these, pick up after school hours, and bring them to the depot each week. They have been working to raise money for the Alberta Children’s Hospital and they’ve surpassed their first goal of $500.00. As a school community, they’re hoping to raise awareness on maintaining a more green-forward lunch! We thank them for kick-starting our new recycling initiative and the installation of new recycling bins at St. Francis to more efficiently manage waste. Today they had the opportunity to present their cheque to the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation who were so appreciative of the donation! Thank you to the Western Wheel for coming to interview them! Way to go boys!

Recognizing that Shrove Tuesday falls during the week students are off, parent volunteers have generously offered to serve up a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Breakfast TOMORROW on Friday, February 17th. Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent in the Roman Catholic Church. Dating back to 1000 AD, over the years Shrove Tuesday not only became a day for Confession, but a time for Catholics to feast on eggs, sugar and dairy which are traditionally restricted during the Lenten fast. #SFAFaith

We are sad to say farewell to Ms. Spiess who finished her last day here at St. Francis. It’s not goodbye, just see you later! Ms. Spiess is heading to work as a teacher at Holy Spirit Academy. We will miss you! You have been such a blessing to this school. ♥️

St. Francis of Assisi had 4 teachers (Mr. Alleluia, Ms. Leger, Mrs. Olson and Mrs. Gatto) attend Writers' Workshop for the last two days alongside Mrs. Avramovic who is part of the district's Workshop Team! 100% of the teachers who teach Language Arts have now participated in this in-house professional development. Together we work to continuously improve our teaching practices and build consistency across grades. #sfalearning 📖📚📝

On Friday, February 17th, students at St. Francis of Assisi are encouraged to wear PINK for Pink Shirt Day. The Pink Shirt Day design was inspired by moments of kindness, empathy and understanding that can mean so much to children impacted by bullying. For bullied children, it can be hard to know where to turn. But a helping and supportive hand can make a world of difference! Remember that whether it's sending a check-in text, calling out bullying behaviour when you see it, or simply offering your support, there are so many ways we can all help and connect with people being bullied. Let's Lift Each Other Up this Pink Shirt Day, and all year round!

A week of 100 Days Smarter Trivia! Kindergartens were the first to place their ballots after morning announcements. Each grade level had a different question to correspond to some of the things they’ve learned within the first 100 days of school. Stay tuned for tomorrow!
