Mother Hubbard's Cupboard

Mothers Hubbard’s Cupboard is a program designed to ensure all children have access to a healthy snack throughout the school day. There are many reasons why a child might need to access this program. Some may not have had time for breakfast, forgot a lunch, need a top-up on a small lunch or simply require a bit more food in the day. St. Francis students are all aware they can access Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard for healthy food choices like juice boxes, granola bars, crackers and fruit bars.

At St. Francis, snacks are distributed as needed to students who require them. The requests can come in the form of a staff member recognizing a student does not have a snack, enough of a lunch, or just needs a pick-me-up item to get through the day, or the student seeking additional food. When this happens, students can access a hot soup, a granola bar or juice box through the front office.

The program also assists our Family School Liaison Worker who is also in a position to note students who might have additional nutritional needs and she often provides snacks through to students on her caseload as well, during her office sessions.  This also preserves the dignity and confidentiality of students who really don't want others to know they are receiving this type of support.
